Smoke from a fire rises into the air as trees burn amongst vegetation in Brazil's Amazon rainforest near Humaita, Amazonas state, Brazil, August 3, 2023. The Amazon has experienced record number of wildfires this October after a severe drough. In the first half of 2023, 3.6 million acres of the Amazon have been burned by wildfires, according to the Rainforest Foundation. The drought has disrupted cargo shipping along the region's rivers and depleted food, water and medical resources for Amazonian indigenous communities. Meanwhile, the fires have generated clouds of smoke that have brought the air quality to surrounding areas to dangerous levels.

Conservationists praised the deal's ambition, saying it amounted to a Paris Agreement for nature in setting out 23 specific targets against which countries can measure their progress. "This is equivalent to the 1.5 degrees Celsius global goal for climate," said Marco Lambertini, director-general of World Wildlife Fund International. "Otherwise, there is a big risk that the cheapest areas are protected rather than those that matter most for biodiversity." During the talks, delegates discussed whether protected areas should be entirely off-limits to human settlement and development, or if some resource extraction should be allowed if managed sustainably. Canada, one of the world's largest nations, is expanding protected land and marine areas in the Arctic.
read moreIn the run-up to the COP27 U.N. climate summit, taking place in Egypt from Nov. 6-18, green groups urged Brazil and other forest nations to team up to increase their bargaining power during talks with potential donors over rainforest protection. Brazil was the climate-change success story of the early 2000s when its government - led then by Lula - slashed deforestation rates in the Amazon, she said. But enforcing forest protection laws in remote areas is a problem for all three, conservationists said, while Bolsonaro's allies form the largest bloc in Brazil's Congress, which could hinder Lula's policy push. Other forest nations - like Colombia - could also take part in talks and join any new alliance at COP27 to create a "more robust and effective" coalition, he added. "Done right, collaboration and exchange of experience between rainforest countries can help in tackling deforestation," Jaeger said.
Da Silva, commonly known as Lula, took 50.9% of the second round vote to incumbent Jair Bolsonaro's 49.1%, according to Brazil's election authority. watch nowLula used his victory address to pledge to combat climate change and deforestation — issues observers say have not just been sidelined but severely worsened under Bolsonaro's tenure. In 2019, he told foreign journalists: "No country in the world has the moral right to talk about the Amazon. "Around 95% of deforestation in the last four years in the Amazon has had some level of illegality," he said. Norway is already looking to resume aid for anti-deforestation efforts to Brazil, which it suspended during Bolsonaro's term, local newspaper Aftenposten reported Monday.
